The Gambia Police Force has impounded Seven (7) vehicles allegedly involved in illegal street car racing, commonly known as stunning.
Illegal car racing on the streets or stunning is considered by law enforcement as a violation of traffic rules and regulations within the Greater Banjul Area, and the Deputy Public Relations officer of the Gambia Police Force, Cadet ASP Muhammed Y. Darboe made this clear while updating the press on the fate of the drivers of the vehicles that were impounded.
Speaking to the press, Muhammed Y. Darboe, the Deputy Public Relations officer of the Gambia Police Force said the people that were involved in this act were arraigned before the Kanifing Tribunal Court
“The people found in possession of the vehicles are charged with offenses contrary to different sections of the motor traffic act, ranging from dangerous driving, unlicensed vehicles, unauthorized use of tainted glass vehicles and other traffic offenses.
“They were all fined by the Court. Three of the people were fined D15, 000.00 each. While the fourth person was fined D25, 000.00. The remaining three people are set to appear before the Kanifing Tribunal Court on the 22nd of February 2023,” The Pro Explained.
The Deputy PRO also advised The Public, and vehicle owners, to desist from giving or renting their vehicles to people involved in such activities because it is endangering lives and causing public nuisances.
“The police are communicating this now in a more serious language and sending a stern warning to individuals who are involved in such activities. We have understood that most of the time, these are people who do not even own these vehicles. This is illegal and it’s unacceptable
“We are very serious about this and that’s why we do not waste any time but take the matter before the Kanifing Tribunal Court. This is a great start from the level of the police. There could be more charges to this, in fact It could attract imprisonment for about five years, but this is more or a less a warning to all individuals who are involved in such actions,” He stated.
