Gambia Police Force Announces Resumption of “Operation Clear the Roads”
By Buba Gagigo
The Gambia Police Force has officially announced the resumption of its “Operation Clear the Roads” campaign, highlighting the continued threat to public safety caused by non-compliance with road regulations. The operation, which originally launched over a year ago, is entering its most decisive phase due to the ongoing violation of public space and street usage.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Gambia Police Force emphasized that despite extensive public education efforts and multiple warnings to vendors and individuals occupying public spaces, compliance with the law remains insufficient. This persistent non-compliance, the police said, is disrupting traffic flow, posing unnecessary hazards to road users, and compromising public safety.
“The Gambia Police Force wishes to notify the public that the ongoing Operation Clear Public Highways and Roads, initiated over a year ago, will now enter its most decisive phase. Despite extensive efforts, public education, and repeated warnings issued to vendors and individuals occupying public spaces and streets, compliance remains unacceptably low. This non-compliance continues to endanger public safety, disrupt traffic flow, and create unnecessary hazards for road users. Let it be made clear: this will no longer be tolerated,” the police announced.
Effective immediately, anyone found occupying public spaces or streets will face stringent enforcement actions. In collaboration with their partners, the police will apply all lawful measures to ensure compliance. The consequences for non-compliance include:
1. Immediate eviction from the occupied space.
2. Seizure of goods and properties found in violation of the law.
3. Prosecution, with penalties including fines, confiscation of items, and other legal sanctions.
The Gambia Police Force reiterated that the operation is non-negotiable and reminded the public that occupying public highways and streets is a direct violation of the law, posing significant risks to public safety.
“As law enforcers, it is our duty to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens. We urge all individuals and vendors currently occupying public spaces and streets to vacate immediately. The GPF will not tolerate further defiance, and any resistance will be met with lawful but firm measures,” the police said.
The police also issued a warning to cattle owners and individuals leaving animals in public spaces, urging them to comply with the directive.
