The Gambia is on track to achieve full electricity coverage by late 2025 or early 2026, according to Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Minister of Information.
Speaking on West Coast Radio on Tuesday, Dr. Ceesay highlighted the government’s progress in expanding electricity access, stating that significant strides have been made in recent years.
“In terms of access to electricity. In 2023 65% of Gambians had access to electricity. Today, it is 70% and by the end of this year, we are expanding this to almost 90% at the rate at which we are going. The idea is a by the end of 2025 early 2026 we will have 100% access, which means we are far ahead of many countries in the continent in terms of access to electricity,” Dr. Ceesay said.
Regarding access to water, the Minister highlighted the significant progress made under President Barrow’s administration, noting that the current government has built more boreholes around the country than both the Jawara and Jammeh administrations and more roads than both administrations combined.
“We’ve built more boreholes to communities, providing access to water for many communities in the country. Access to roads, we’ve built over 1000 kilometers of roads as opposed to 800 Something kilometers of road built by both governments since independence even before pre-independence. So obviously, the access as well has expanded in all these social sectors as well due to His Excellency, the President’s leadership,” Dr. Ceesay said on West Coast Radio on Tuesday.
