Gambia cautiously condemns killing of Saudi journalist Khashoggi

Gambia said the killing of the Saudi journalist at the country’s embassy in Turkey is a crime it “vehemently condemned” though it also praised steps taken by Saudi. 

 

Gambia Government has cautiously condemned what it call the “vicious murder, dismemberment and mysterious disposal of the body of the Saudi journalist” Jamal Khashoggi in a statement issued by country’s foreign ministry on Thursday.

Though the country said the killing of the journalist is “reprehensible” and “unacceptable”, it said it “greatly appreciate” that Saudi has accepted the incident happened at its consulate and express regret over the incident.

Gambia also recognized the condolences expressed to son and family of Khashoggi and also the decision of the Kingdom to investigate the incident which resulted to the arrest of twenty-one people who are currently charged with death penalty.

“…The Government of The Gambia wishes to commend the Saudi authorities for the measures taken so far and expresses its solidarity with the Kingdom on its principled stance on this matter,” a part of the statement stated.

“The Government of the Gambia is also highly confident that His Majesty King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosque, with the assistance of the Kingdom’s Judiciary will handle this matter with all the urgency and seriousness it so highly and rightfully deserves.”

Khashoggi has been killed on October 2 at the Saudi consulate in Turkey but the leadership of the Kingdom denied any knowledge or involvement in the incident.
