Gambia Armed Forces Confirms Navy Fire Incident: One Dead, Two Injured

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that a fire outbreak at the Naval Command in Banjul has claimed the life of a Gambia Navy rating and left two others injured. Additionally, a driver and an assistant from Jah Oil Company sustained injuries during the incident.

According to GAF, the fire broke out around 6:30 PM while a Jah Oil fuel tanker was delivering the monthly fuel supply to the Gambia Navy. The blaze resulted in severe casualties, with one navy personnel losing his life and four others suffering injuries.


“The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) confirms that a fire broke out this evening at approximately 1830 hrs at The Naval Command in Banjul. The incident occurred while a fuel tanker belonging to Jah Oil Company was discharging the monthly fuel supply for the Gambia Navy, resulting in a severe blaze. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire tragically claimed the life of one Gambia Navy rating and injured two others. Additionally, the driver and an assistant from Jah Oil Company sustained injuries.,” GAF said.


The Armed Forces statement disclosed that Emergency response teams from the Navy and The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services acted swiftly to contain the fire. The injured individuals are currently receiving medical care at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH).

“The Gambia Armed Forces extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and all affected by the incident, and prays for the speedy recovery of the injured. A full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, and further updates will be provided accordingly,” they concluded.
