The former vice president of the Gambia, Fatou Jallow Tambajang, has claimed that the decision to sack her was influenced by foreign minister Dr Mamadou Tangara and Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party.
Tambajang was appointed as country’s vice president by President Adama Barrow. In June 2018, she was sacked from her position but the Presidency did not disclose why.
“The president said he removed me because I have written a letter to the UN signing it acting president… And that that was unconstitutional and that it was diplomatic. That was the advice he got from his current foreign minister Momodou Tangara and the former vice president Ousainou Darboe,” said Tambajang Jallow to Kerr Fatou, a weekly television programme on GRTS. The full episode of the programme will be aired on Thursday.
Tambajang Jallow said she had an issue with Dr Tangara during her visit to the United Nation to attend the Commission on the status of women. She claimed they travelled with $32, 000 and Dr Tangara claimed they have spent $21, 000 on vehicle rentals, an amount she found to be too high.
“I told my permanent secretary that he must be joking…,” said Tambajang.
He said Dr Tangara, unhappy with her position on how the money was used, used that to victimize her. “He has gone to the extend of convincing him (President Barrow) that I was in a haste for his position,” said said.
