A former Banjulian lawmaker Abdoulie Saine has been arrested by police over a hateful comment directed at a particular social group.

Saine, a member of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction party, has recorded an audio many considered to be offensive to Mandinkas.

The audio went viral online on Sunday prompting condemnations from all sections of the Gambian society.

“He has been invited for questioning and investigations are ongoing… He is being questioned and if any action is taken, we will let you know…,” said Lamin Njie, the new police spokesperson.

Njie said Saine who was arrested on Sunday is yet to be charged. Many commentators consider his audio as constituting hate speech.
