Yahya Bojang still wears visible scars of torture. He was a member of the United Democratic Party, the biggest opposition grouping under former president Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorial rule.
Bojang told country’s Truth Commission on Tuesday that he was arrested several times and electrocuted. His crime was his belonging to the UDP, according to him.
Bojang said he was at one time electrocuted on his private part that he could not make love for three years.
A resident of Brikama Kabafita, Bojang was born in Foni Kanfenda and he is a relative to ex-President Yahya Jammeh. He said he was a cleaner at a health post in Brikama for about 24 years before the AFPRC terminated his services in 1996.
He said this was as a result of his opposition to a military rule in The Gambia. He stated he felt that the country was in the wrong hands and that a military government receives little or no external supports.
Boajng was one of the founder members of the UDP.
“My membership at the UDP has always brought me hardship; no ease from one hardship to another,” he said.
Bojang said in the aftermath of one UDP rally in 1996, he was arrested and taken to the NIA where he was detained.
While in detention, he said Abdoulie Kujabi, a former director of National Intelligence Agency, ordered for him to be tortured. He said he was electrocuted on several occasions during his detention at the NIA.
Bojang would spend a week at ‘Bambadina, a notorious cell at NIA design for so call high profile prisoners.
“I still cannot do anything with my hands,” he said.
“I don’t have anything and I cannot do anything for myself now.”
Meanwhile, another witness Demba Touray who appeared in the morning session of the Commission, endured similar fate. He is also a member of the UDP who has been reportedly tortured several times.
