Colonel Ndiangne Diouf, the newly appointed commander of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), met with President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul on Tuesday. Colonel Diouf succeeds Colonel Baboucarr Toure, who served as ECOMIG Commander for a year.

In a statement issued by the State House, President Barrow expressed his gratitude to the ECOWAS Heads of State and the ECOMIG forces for their unwavering support in maintaining peace and stability in The Gambia over the past eight years. The President also formally welcomed Colonel Diouf to his new role, emphasizing the importance of continuity in the mission’s objectives.

“The Gambian leader expressed his appreciation to the ECOWAS Heads of State and the ECOMIG forces for their support in maintaining peace and stability in the country over the past eight years. He also took the opportunity to welcome Colonel Diouf to his new role,” State House said.

The State House statement went on to disclose that the outgoing Commander, Colonel Baboucarr Toure, shared his appreciation for the opportunity to serve, calling his tenure as ECOMIG Commander a privilege. Minister of Defence, Honourable Sering Modou Njie, also commended Colonel Toure for his dedication and professionalism during his one-year term, highlighting his exceptional service as a career officer.

Colonel Diouf, is quoted in the statement as reaffirming his commitment to meeting the expectations of his new role. He pledged to continue the work of his predecessors and emphasized his intent to cooperate and collaborate with relevant stakeholders.

“Colonel Diouf expressed his commitment to meet the expectations placed upon him and pledged to cooperate and collaborate in order to build on the work of his predecessors. During the discussions, H.E. Miatta Lily French, the Resident Representative of the ECOWAS Commission in The Gambia, pledged to support the country in ensuring a smooth transition,” State House said.
