Drug Destruction: DLEAG Burns About5 Tons Of Prohibited Substances

The Gambia Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) has burnt about 5 tons of different prohibited substances seized over the year.
The burnt substances include Cannabis, Cannabis Resin (Hashish), Heroine, and Cocaine which are worth D109, 529, 070.
The DLEAG Director General Alh. Bakary Gassama, Minister of Interior, among others witnessed the destruction ceremony at Old Cape Road in Bakau on Wednesday Morning.
“You are about to witness the destruction of 4 tons, 607 kg, 700g of Cannabis, 238kg, 264g of Cannabis Resin (Hashish) 17g of Heroine 52kg, 143g, 400mg of Cocaine. The street value of these drugs stands at One- hundred and nine million, five hundred and twenty-nine thousand dalasi (D109, 529, 070.00). This is equivalent to two million One-hundred and six thousand, three hundred and twenty-eight dollars and seventy-seven cents (USD 2, 106, 328.27),” he said ahead of the burning of the prohibited substances.
DG Gassama credited the seizure of the ‘huge’ quantity of drugs to the ‘extreme’ hard work and commitment of his officers; before urging them to serve with professionalism and integrity at all times.
The Minister of Interior Yankuba Sonko said the fight against drug abuse and trafficking is a shared and common responsibility; adding that based on available and verifiable evidence, The Gambia is highly stable in terms of drug trafficking.
Annually, the DLEAG burns down different prohibited substances confiscated by its operatives. This year’s activity destroyed about 5 tons of drugs seized over the year with a street value of about One-hundred and ten million dalasi.
