Demba Sabally Declares He Will Never Witness a UDP Government in The Gambia
By Buba Gagigo
Demba Sabally, the Deputy National President of the National People’s Party (NPP) and Minister of Agriculture, has strongly criticized the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), labeling it as a party with violent tendencies. He firmly stated that he never wished to see a UDP-led government in The Gambia during his lifetime.
“I do not want to see a day in my life when UDP is the government of this country,” Sabally said in an interview with Issues That Matter on YouTube.
When asked whether he harbored personal hatred for the UDP, Sabally denied any animosity but emphasized his strong opposition to the party’s ideology.
“I don’t hate UDP, but I disagree with their beliefs, and I disagree with them strongly. We have already seen how they operated when President Barrow allowed them to take part in managing the country in 2017 and 2018. Their violent tendencies were evident. Those who are bold enough will speak out, while others may choose to stay silent. If UDP ever comes to power, it will be worse than a dictatorship,” he asserted.
Sabally also criticized UDP leader Ousainou Darboe, accusing him of attempting to influence law enforcement.
“He calls the Inspector General of police to arrest A, B, and C. Even last week he said Bahoum should be arrested. Why will you at that level, the former vice president dictate to the Inspector General of Police who to arrest and who not to arrest? If he was the president don’t you think it would be worse? If he was the president he would dictate the IGP to arrest me, you, and everybody else. Because even as an opposition leader, he’s instructing the IGP to arrest Bahoum and somebody else,” he said.
He further alleged that Darboe once reported a vulnerable woman to the Kairaba Police Station for insulting him, contrasting this with President Adama Barrow’s approach to criticism.
“How many people have insulted President Barrow? Hundreds, even thousands. Yet, he has never taken anyone to the police or ordered their arrest. This is one of the many reasons I believe UDP is not fit to govern this country,” he argued.
When asked whether he would leave The Gambia if UDP formed the next government, Sabally was resolute in his response.
“I will be a corpse but I will never leave this country for anybody. I did not leave this country for Yahya Jammeh, I was here. I was part of the people who formed a Political Party in 2015, went to campaign while Yahya Jammeh was here with his guns, and we went to elections and he was defeated. So if I did not leave this country for a dictator who could have slaughtered anybody, i am definitely not going to leave this country for a UDP government. But I am pretty convinced that a UDP shall not be a government in my lifetime,” he concluded
