No candidates of the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress (GPDP) and National Convention Party (NCP) turned up for nomination at the Kanifing Municipality (KM) as scheduled on Tuesday.

However, Malang Sanyang, the GMC candidate for the Kombo South Constituency filed his papers at the commission’s office in the West Coast Region (WCR).

Similarly, two GMC candidates have submitted their details for nomination in the Upper River Region (URR).

The duo are Mai Ahmed Fatty (party leader) for Wuli West Constituency and Ebrima Conteh for Wuli East Constituency.

Meanwhile, six independent candidates submitted their credentials to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) office in the West Coast Region.

The Independent candidates are Momodou Bah for Foni Jarrol Constituency,  Bakary K. Badjie for Foni  Bintang Constituency, Sainey Bah for Foni Jarrol Constituency, Baboucarr FM. Colley for Brikama South Constituency, Mansour Sowe for Brikama South Constituency, and Salieu Barry for Foni Brefet Constituency.

The National Assembly, one of the 3 arms of government, is crucial in a democratic process through its oversight, law-making, representation and resource allocation functions, among others.

While some candidates have received their acceptance letters from the electoral commission, the latest to submit their qualifications are expecting to hear from the commission the fate of their application in the coming days.

This time, unlike the presidential election nomination in 2021, candidates will not be rejected for falling short of qualification, prior to the deadline of the end of nomination; instead, they would be allowed to submit outstanding details for consideration, latest 13th March.
