Darboe Describes Proposed Friday Peaceful Demonstration As Fundamental
By Buba Gagigo
Lawyer Ousainu Darbo, the Secretary-General and party leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has described the proposed Friday Peaceful Procession as fundamental in the history of the Gambia.
“This peaceful demonstration at this point in our country’s history is fundamental. Corruption has eaten away the flesh of the country and now sucking its bones. It is time we rise up together as a country to fight against it. Therefore I am urging all Gambians, particularly UDP supporters across the country to come out in their numbers and support the UDP youth movement in their quest to safeguard our resources,” the UDP leader said.
He said for the first time in the history of their party, they are granted a permit to demonstrate peacefully.
“For over 26 years the UDP has been denied a permit to stage demonstrations and exercise their constitutional rights. Yesterday, the UDP Youth Wing was granted a permit to organize and hold a peaceful demonstration against corruption in the country.
“They achieved what we couldn’t in over 26 years. And I would like to congratulate youth Wing for such a huge achievement. History has said that row elements are usually planted in peaceful demonstrations to disrupt it so that the permit can be revoked. We hope this would not be the case for this very important demonstration,” the UDP leader said.
The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has granted the Youth Wing of the United Democratic Party (UDP) a permit to hold a peaceful procession against corruption on March 10th, 2023.
