The environmental activists from Gunjur who were arrested and charged to court for removing the “toxic waste” disposal pipes of Golden Lead Fishmeal processing plant have been acquitted and discharged on Thursday.

The activists, Alhagie Bojang, Omar Darboe, Ousman Sanneh, Lamin Jassey, Foday Darboe, and Amadou Scattred Janneh, were arrested and arraigned before the magistrate court in Brikama in June.

The activists were charged with “criminal trespass” and “punishment for malicious injury”.

The police said the activists “with intent to intimidate or cause annoyance unlawfully entered into the premises of Golden Lead”, thereby committing an offence.

Count 2 of the charge brought against the activists was in connection to the allegations that they “willfully and unlawfully damage the discharge pipes” of the company valued at $50, 000.

But on Thursday the judge presiding over the activists’ case pronounced a “no case” to answer verdict.

The accused six were represented by Lawyer Lamin J Darbo at the Brikama Magistrates Court.
