CLARIFICATION ON THE PROPOSED CHAMEN MATERNITY WARD PROJECT
Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, Minister of Health
The Ministry of Health wishes to address recent statements regarding the proposed maternity
ward ni Chamen village in the Central River Region. It is important to clarify the facts to avoid misunderstandings and to ensure transparency.
The Ministry initially issued clearance to the Gambian Diaspora Association on July 2, 2024, to construct a maternity ward at Chamen Health Center in the Nianija District. However, since there was no indication of when the Diaspora Group will commence work. in the interim, a
grant was secured from the African Development Bank (AfDB) through the National Social
Protection Secretariat to build new structures and renovate existing ones of the entire health centre. This decision was not a rejection of the Gambian Diaspora Association’s efforts but a
strategic move to maximize benefits for the people of Chamen and other communities. The
cancellation letter clearly indicated the ministry’s willingness to collaborate and suggested the redirection of the support to another area.
The decision to prioritize the AfDB initiative was based on its wider scope, sustainability, and
the opportunity to address broader healthcare needs ni the facility. The AfDB grant offers extensive support for rural health facilities, including the construction of new structures and
the renovation of existing ones, covering multiple communities within the region, including Chamen.
The Ministry greatly values the Gambian Diaspora Association’s contributions and goodwill.
We sincerely appreciate their commitment ot supporting healthcare development ni The
Gambia. The Ministry is eager to continue collaborating them to redirect their support to other areas in need.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation healthcare systems and improve health services for all.
Signed,
