Busumbala Constituency Women Express Discontent Over Lady Councilor Election Process
By Fatou Sillah
Women from the Busumbala Constituency, affiliated with the United Democratic Party (UDP), have voiced their dissatisfaction with the lady councilor election process, accusing the National People’s Party (NPP) of politicizing the selection.
Fatou Jawara, a UDP delegate and resident of Busumbala, stated that all the voters involved in the process appeared to be supporters of the NPP.
“We came here for the lady councillor election and chose Wonto Ceesay to represent us. However, upon arrival, we were not satisfied with how things were being handled. Our main concern was that when they read out the voter list, none of the names were familiar to us—they were all supporters of the NPP. What upset us even more is that while they claimed the process didn’t involve men, all the NPP men were inside,” she explained.
UDP candidate Wonto Ceesay explained why she chose to boycott the election.
“I boycotted the proceedings because everyone inside, including the Alkalos, are NPP supporters. All the delegates are aligned with the NPP, and I’m not pleased with how things are being handled,” she expressed.
Binta Touray, another resident of the constituency, called on the government to stop politicizing the Women’s Bureau, stating that it should remain a platform focused on women’s issues.
“President Barrow, you are our president today, and this is not about politics; it’s about women’s affairs. When we talk about the Women’s Bureau, that’s a matter for women, not men. It should be a woman representing women’s interests in the council. So, why are men taking the lead in these matters? They say the Alkalos should choose two women, but all the women being selected by the Alkalos are supporters of the NPP,” she stated.
