Barrow has promised the Government will take care of the medical bill of the wounded Faraba protesters
President Adama Barrow has promised swift action from his government in ensuring justice for the victims of “police brutality” in Faraba.
The armed wing of the Gambian police have opened fire at protesters at Faraba killing 2 people and injuring several others.
“We sacrificed everything to make this change. Definitely we will not be part of the people who will destroy it,” Barrow said as he visited people nursing gunshot wounds at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital.
“We want Gambians to enjoy this change… We believe in the principle of democracy and rule of law… Let us come together as a country and be united. If we are united, we are stronger.”
Since the killings were confirmed on Monday, Barrow has ordered an investigation into the incident. He promised full force of the law.
Meanwhile, both the Gambia’s interior minister Ebrima Mballow and Inspector General Landing Kinteh have denied authorizing the use of fire arms against the protesters.
Barrow met with the wounded and assured them that his government will take swift action. He also met with two people who explain to him that some of their people are still with the police.
The two gentleman claimed two of their people were stabbed with a bayonet and they are still at the police custody.
Barrow ordered the secretary general Habib Drammeh to take up to case and forward it to the relevant authority for immediate action.
“This is not our wishes… We fought for the change together…,” Barrow told the two gentlemen who are natives of Faraba.
The Gambian leader also visited the critical wards of the country’s main referral hospital where he was exposed to deficiencies in the institution.
“We will see how best we can support you… Getting this information first hand will change my approach to this hospital,” Barrow said.
The chief medical director of the hospital, Lamin Samateh, has expressed his delight at the visit of the president.
