Nogoi Njie was visited by the First Lady who promised to help her through this struggling times
The Mayoress of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, has donated D56, 000 to Nogoi Njie, a United Democratic Party supporter who has been struggling with her health since her release from prison early 2017.
Njie was an opposition activists under the former dictator who has been jailed and reportedly sexually harassed while in detention.
Her and several others colleagues who were arrested have complained of ill-health since their release but they were unlucky to have assistance.
She was arrested with key young members of the United Democratic Party like Solo Sandeng and Fatoumatta Jawara.
The young opposition activists took to the street at Westfield on April 14 of 2016 to protest for “proper electoral reform” when they were arrested by paramilitary forces.
They were taken to the paramilitary headquarters at Westfield and later to the National Intelligence Agency.
The leader of the group Solo Sandeng died while in detention while other likes Nogoi said they were tortured and sexually harassed.
After learning about the death of Sandeng, the leadership of the UDP including Ousainou Darboe took to the street demanding his release dead or alive.
They were also rounded up and tried alongside Nogoi and others. In July, the protesters were jailed to 3 years in prison.
While they were in prison the former dictator was quoted at his Tallinding rally saying all his political opponents will die before the December election.
Prior to that statement, the UDP diaspora has issued a statement claiming they have intel that Jammeh was trying to poison their leadership.
Though this report was never confirmed, five of the jailed protesters have died since they were released following Jammeh’s December election defeat.
Nogoi was also visited by the First Lady Fatoumatta Bah Barrow on Monday who promised to assist her get a good medical attention.
The First Lady visited the Mandinaring women’s garden following her visit to Nogoi.
Meanwhile, a local campaign group trying to help the lady most people consider a heroine has raised over US$3000 on a go-fund-me account. The funding is expected to help her in her medical expenses. It is not clear though what medical condition she has.
