The Chef de Mission of the Commonwealth games Bakary K. Jammeh has said that his wife travelled with him as ‘accompanying guest’ to the Commonwealth Games but was never paid per-diem.

“The Commonwealth Games participation Admin is handled by the GNOC Executive Director who doubles as the Team General Manager at the Games. As Chef de Mission, I am entitled to a Special Guest who can visit me at the Games village and any match venue during the Games. My Guest is not entitled to any other benefit. For records, and you may double check with the GNOC, at no time was my wife paid a dalasi (Airfares or Per Diem) for the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham,” Bakary K Jammeh told Kerr Fatou today.

Jammeh’s reaction came after a leaked letter addressed to the GNOC President dated 21st July instructed the payment of 14 days per-diem allowance of £300 each day to Minister Bakary Y. Badjie; £200 to Mrs. Hawa Jobarteh (Minister Badjie’s wife), as an accompanying guest; £200 to Mr. Musa Mbye, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports; and £200 to Marcel Kevin Mendy, Executive Director, National Sports Council for the Commonwealth, and Islamic Games.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie had earlier today confirmed to Kerr Fatou that his wife has received allowances for both the Commonwealth and Islamic Games, although she did not attend the Commonwealth Games, due to a visa issue.

However, the said letter made no mention of either the Chef de Mission of the Commonwealth Games, Bakary K. Jammeh or his wife.

The Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England took place from 28th July- 8th August; while the 5th Islamic Games in Konya, Turkey was held from 9th – 19th August 2022.

Meanwhile, according to the Central Bank of the Gambia weekly valuation rates as at 15th August 2022, Minister Badjie’s wife received an estimate of D185, 052 as per-diem allowance for the Commonwealth Games she never attended.
