The Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), Yankuba Darboe, has disclosed that the Central Government has not provided any development subventions to the council since 2023. He further revealed that the government has also failed to pay property rates for its assets within the region, as well as its geology contributions.

Chairman Darboe made these remarks on Tuesday during a ceremony in Brikama, where the council distributed twenty-eight million Dalasis (D28 million) to the twenty-eight ward councilors in the West Coast Region to support development projects in their respective wards.

“As I stand before you today, I want to report that the Central Government has not been providing any development subventions to this council since 2023, and have not even been paying their central government property rates nor their geology contributions to our region. However, with the support of you the people of our region, we are progressing and registering development in our region. Thus, we say thank you for your support and cooperation in paying your taxes and paying them in time,” Chairman Darboe said.

Brikama Area Council is one of the eight Local Government Administrative Authorities in The Gambia, responsible for overseeing the West Coast Region. The West Coast Region is home to the largest concentration of the country’s population.
