Article 19 is an international human rights organization based in Dakar that fights for the protection of peoples’ rights to freedom of expression.
The attention of Article 19 West Africa was drawn to the unfortunate attack on Saturday 4 August on the news crew of GRTS during the funeral of the late Asombi Bojang, mother to Yahya Jammeh, former President of The Gambia.
We condemn this and any other action by any person or group of people that infringe on the rights of journalists and the media to carry out their duties devoid of intimidation.
Article 19 awaits the commencement of full and thorough investigation and conclusion of same and would like to remind both political party activists and security personnel of their responsibility towards guaranteeing the safety of media men and women- who remain pivotal to entrenching democracy in The Gambia.
