The Anti-Crime Unit of the Gambia Police Force has arrested five individuals in connection with theft and robbery incidents in Brufut, Sanchaba, and Jambur.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 24, are Ebrima Bah, Assan Sowe, Sheriff Dibba, Muhammed Sowe, and Ousman Ceesay.
The arrested individuals are currently detained at the Anti-Crime Headquarters in Banjulinding. This action follows the Gambia Police Force’s ongoing efforts to combat crime in the Greater Banjul area and throughout the country.
Commissioner Momodou Sowe of the Police Anti-Crime Unit reported that one suspect was apprehended at the crime scene in Brufut Heights. During the investigation, this individual identified additional suspected members, who were subsequently arrested by the police.
“We recovered three brand-new cutlasses that they (suspects) used on their victims. On this particular day, they attacked this Brufut Heights home, where they stabbed a watchman who was admitted to the hospital. They were doing a lot of criminal activities within Sanchaba. And in Sanchaba, they affected four different compounds within the Month of July, from 4th of July to 24th of July,” Commissioner Sowe revealed.
He further emphasized that these robbers steal all properties from the compounds they attack, including mobile phones and televisions.
The Commissioner added that the Anti-Crime Unit has been diligently working to apprehend these individuals. He described them as notorious criminals, noting that some have already been arrested and are currently standing trial.
“These people have been in our intelligence’s reports, and we have been working hard to make sure that they are arrested. But, thank God, we got them arrested. If we see within the footage, we have some water pumping machines that have been recovered by our investigators,” he said.
He also assures the public that the Anti-Crime Unit is working tirelessly to combat crime across the country. Commissioner Sowe urges the public to assist his team by providing timely information to help fight crimes effectively and efficiently.
“And also, we have some boys that were also arrested during the same weekend at Wellingara. These are two gangs who were fighting each other, smashing people’s windows and motor vehicle windshields. 14 of them are also arrested, and those people will also appear before court as soon as possible. Some of them are charged with assault causing body harm because some people sustain injuries and wilful damage to property. But what I will solicit from the general public is they all have to support the police with the indiscipline,” Commissioner Sowe said
He also urges apartment owners to be cautious about who they allow to stay in their units.
“These robbers don’t stay in their house. They rent apartments or rent lodges where they go and stay. Because they were arrested in one apartment in Bijilo and when we were investigating we noticed that they were also lodging in one lodge around Old Yundum. So we are also asking the lodge owners please, when people come to the lodge try to find documents and observe their movements,” he said.
The five individuals face charges of robbery, attempted murder, robbery with violence, burglary, theft, willful damage to property, attempted felony, conspiracy to commit felony, and receiving stolen property. They are expected to appear in court as soon as possible.
