The annual session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee commenced on Monday at the prestigious Great Hall of the People in Beijing, marking a significant event in China’s political calendar.

Attended by President Xi Jinping and other prominent Chinese leaders, the opening meeting of the 14th CPPCC National Committee’s second session saw a gathering of international media outlets, including Kerr Fatou, to cover the proceedings.

In his address to the session, Wang Huning, Chairman of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, presented the work report of the Standing Committee. He highlighted the substantial achievements of the CPPCC in 2023, with over 5,600 proposals received and a remarkable implementation rate of 99.9 percent. Wang emphasized efforts to streamline processes, enhance field research, and reduce bureaucratic burdens, all aimed at facilitating effective governance.

Underlining the CPPCC’s commitment to advancing China’s modernization, Wang outlined priorities for 2024, focusing on offering constructive suggestions, fostering consensus, and contributing to the nation’s economic and social development goals.

He also highlighted the new achievements made by the 14th CPPCC National Committee and its Standing Committee and their contributions in serving the development of the cause of the Communist Party of China and the state.

“In 2024, the CPPCC will focus on advancing Chinese modernization, actively offer suggestions, foster broad consensus, and wisdom and strength for the country to achieve the economic and social development objectives for the entire year”, he said.

Reflecting on China’s economic performance in 2023, Wang noted a robust rebound with a GDP growth of 5.2%, surpassing the initial target of around 5%. He reiterated China’s significant contribution to global economic growth, accounting for approximately 30% of the world’s economic advancement.

 ”Gross domestic product grew by 5.2 percent, surpassing the initial target of around 5 percent.” he said.
