The Gambian U-20, on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, won their first game with a goal to nil against the Tunisian side in the U-20 African Cup of Nations tournament that just got underway in Egypt.
The young Scorpions Captain, Alagie Saine, scored the winning goal in the 85th minute of the game to earn the Gambian side the maximum 3 points, and the scorpion’s Captain Man of the Match (MOTM) award.
“Mahmudu Bajo and Ba Lamin Sowe both tried from a distance but saw their efforts flew wide. After the break, both coaches brought in fresh legs. Hawks left-back, Sainey Sanyang, clipped the ball in from the left, and Haruna Rashid Njie hesitantly headed it over the crossbar in the 72nd minute.
“The 2021 bronze medalists took the lead at the Alexandria Stadium when AC Horsens’ central defender rose high in the box to thump in a header from Sanyang’s delivery in the 85th minute of the game to earn the all-important points. Saine also won the MOTM award, something very familiar with this team,” GFF wrote on their Facebook page.
The last time the Young Scorpions scored in their opening fixture at this tournament was their debut campaign in Brazzaville in 2007.
Gambia now takes on Zambia on Friday evening in their second Group C game.
