Ya Ndey Njie, a prominent supporter of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) from Farafenni in the North Bank Region, has defected to the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) on Sunday.

Ya Ndey Njie, who was previously with the Gambia Democratic Congress, switched to the NPP during the last presidential election.

She decided to join the UDP after meeting with its Campaign and Organising committee, which has been touring the country since last Thursday.

“I will accept whatever MC Cham Jr offers me, and so will my family and my people,” she declared during her defection ceremony in Farafenni on Sunday,” Ya Ndey Njie said.

The UDP Deputy Organising Secretary Ebrima Dibba said, “Many people are leaving the NPP and joining the UDP, from Lower Nuimi, Upper Nuimi, and Jokadou. But when we came to Farafenni, we met a lady who was promised by Adama Barrow that he would take her to Mecca and give her money, but he failed to keep his promises. But the old woman said she loves her country and she realized that these are not people she can trust or work with. That’s why Ya Ndey Njie has officially joined the UDP today.”

The UDP’s Campaign and Organising Committee is continuing its nationwide tour.
