The University of The Gambia (UTG) has officially dismissed Dr. Alieu Gibba, a lecturer at the institution, for allegedly spreading false allegations regarding the university’s promotions process.
In a statement, UTG detailed the reasons for the dismissal, citing the findings of its Disciplinary Committee.
“Following the unauthorized public statements and the allegations you made against the promotions process of the University of The Gambia, the Disciplinary Committee, after a thorough enquiry. Found the allegations to be untrue. Furthermore, despite being given the opportunity to do so, you were unable to provide evidence to the contrary. These media publications have had a damaging impact on the reputation and credibility of the University, both nationally and globally,” the UTG said.
The university emphasized that its Governing Council treats such matters with utmost seriousness due to their potential to harm public perception of the institution.
“Integrity in our processes is vital to the mission of the University and its relationships with stakeholders, including the nation and the wider international academic community. Your action of disseminating false or unverified information could, and actually, did tarnish the reputation of the University; and is a serious misconduct that breaches our policies on professional conduct and integrity. Therefore, I am directed to inform you that you have been dismissed from the employment of the University of the Gambia (UTG), with immediate effect,” they said.
UTG further instructed Dr. Gibba to return all university property, including electronic devices, ID cards, and documents, within seven days. The institution’s Director of Finance has been tasked with calculating any entitlements or liabilities owed to Dr. Gibba in accordance with its policies.
“Please arrange with the Chief Director of Operations to return any University property, laptops, other electronic devices, ID card, books and documents in your possession, within seven (7) days of your receipt of this letter. We request that you respect the confidentiality undertakings you signed upon joining the University, and refrain from any further actions that could harm the Institution’s reputation. We wish you success in your future endeavours,” the letter concluded.
