The National Assembly Member (NAM) for Upper Niumi Constituency, Hon. Omar Darboe, has called for the construction of the much talked about Hakalang road in his constituency,to be fast-tracked.
“The people of Upper Niumi are not happy with the progress of the work at Hakalang road. They are not happy due to the slow progress of the work. I am calling on the government to ask the contractors to fast-track the work. The work is somehow slow and the people of Upper Niumi are not happy with the work,” Hon. Darboe said.
Hon. Darboe made this call during the adjournment debate of the Parliament’s first extraordinary Session.
On the 26th of September 2020, the President of the Republic of the Gambia, His Excellency, Adama Barrow, laid the foundation stone for the construction of 88KM Niumi Hakalang road in the North Bank Region (NBR).
Since the foundation stone was laid almost years ago, the construction of the road is still not completed and the NAM for Upper Niumi Hon. Omar Darboe is calling on the authorities to do something about the slow progress of the work.
While continuing his contribution to the adjournment debate, Hon. Darboe also called on the authorities to save Kunta Kinteh Island from erosion.
The Upper Niumi NAM told the authorities responsible for tourism in the country to do something about the Island.
“I will talk about Kunta Kinteh Island. That Island is being eroded by the river day by day and nothing is being done about it. This Island serves as a source of income for the Tourism Industry. The Island attracts tourists to come to the Gambia. So I am calling on the authorities to do something about it. Because the river is eroding the Island day by day,” Hon. Darboe said
