United Democratic Party’s diaspora statement of solidarity

Following several meetings and consultations by the Party’s Central Committee, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has finally declared its position on the term of the Coalition’s Transitional President. This position was announced and articulated by the Party leader and Secretary General at a press conference on Wednesday, 6 November, 2019.

The Party concluded that as a constituent stakeholder of Coalition 2016, it is their belief that all articles that formed the terms and conditions of the Agreement should be adhered to, respected and fulfilled.
Almost three years in, a significant condition that the Coalition Independent Candidate to serve for three years as President if he wins the Presidential Elections of 2016 and to resign as President at the end of the three years and supervise fresh elections in which elections he shall not participate, is outstanding.

This was primary in arriving at a consensus that occasioned the formation of the Coalition. Therefore, the UDP’s position in demanding the President to be faithful to the agreement and other campaign promises, is apt.

Lest we forget, the only person who can and should be held accountable in this matter is President Adama Barrow. He should safeguard his promises and integrity by resigning at the end of the agreed term.

The UDP Diaspora, believes that this determination is in line with upholding the Institutional integrity and consistency of the United Democratic Party, and we’re in support and solidarity with the Party and the leadership. We believe that integral to correcting the misnomer in our polity and enhancing good governance at all levels, is endeavoring to hold elected and appointed representatives accountable.

Thank you,
