The United Nations Children’s Fund has partnered with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to host a 15-member delegation from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the Italian media.
The team visited several health facilities in the country and met with several stakeholders in the health sector.
The visit provided an opportunity for authorities to share experiences, and key strategies and efforts that have contributed to The Gambia maintaining one of the highest immunization coverage rates in the world.
The visitors joined the First Lady of The Gambia Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow Foundation and the newly-appointed Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Isatou Touray on a visit to the Bundung Maternal and Child Health Hospital.
The team had a guided tour of the hospital, examining the maternal and child health facilities, as well as the services being provided to mothers and their babies.
The team also visited an outreach clinic in Nioro Jattaba in the Lower River Region, where they saw immunization in action, through the integrated service that brings healthcare closer to rural communities.
UNICEF continues to support the government of The Gambia to ensure quality healthcare and access to immunization for every child.
