Lare Ceesay, a prominent figure in the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), has alleged that President Adama Barrow has a plan to use the Gambia’s security forces to declare a state of emergency as a means of holding onto power.
“President Barrow has three strategies ahead of the 2026 presidential election. The first strategy is to steal the election just like he did in 2021 but the Masembeh by-election has revealed that is no more possible for him. His second strategy is to buy the election and again the Masembeh by-election has shown that is not possible. Now what is left for him is to appoint someone at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) or to use our security to put them in place so that if anything happens he can declare a State of emergency so that he continues to be president. Those are his strategies because everyone knows about the embezzlement in his government,” Lare stated.
The UDP supporter further asserted that Barrow and his associates are primarily focused on securing their wealth for when they leave office, and if they manage to retain it, they are concerned only with how to enjoy it without facing any repercussions.
“They no more care about the country, this is how they are thinking,” Lare Ceesay added during an interview with Kibarro Network on Sunday.
