The United Democratic Party (UDP) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the constitutional right of all Gambians to vote, regardless of where they reside. The recent decision by the Gambia National Assembly to reject the bill allowing Gambians in the diaspora to vote is a disappointing setback for democracy and inclusivity. This decision not only disregards the significant contributions of the diaspora community but also undermines the principles of equality and fairness enshrined in our constitution.
The Gambian diaspora plays a pivotal role in the nation’s development, contributing approximately one-third of the country’s GDP through remittances and bolstering foreign exchange reserves. These contributions are a testament to the diaspora’s enduring connection to and investment in The Gambia’s future. Yet, despite their invaluable role, their voices are being silenced by those who voted against the diaspora voting bill.
The UDP National Assembly members stood firmly in support of the bill, recognizing that every Gambian, whether at home or abroad, deserves the right to participate in shaping the nation’s future. We believe that democracy thrives when all citizens are empowered to exercise their constitutional rights. It is disheartening to see that the NPP, NRP, most independent candidates, and the No-Alliance coalition chose to vote against this progressive bill, effectively disenfranchising a significant portion of our population.
The UDP condemns this regressive decision and calls on the National Assembly to reconsider its stance. The right to vote is not a privilege to be granted or withheld at the discretion of a few; it is a fundamental right guaranteed to all Gambians by the Constitution. Denying this right to the diaspora is a betrayal of the principles of democracy and inclusivity that our nation strives to uphold.
Furthermore, the UDP urges the Executive and Legislature to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling on this matter. The judiciary has a critical role in interpreting the Constitution and safeguarding the rights of all citizens. Any attempt to undermine or disregard the Supreme Court’s decision would be a grave violation of the rule of law and the separation of powers. The UDP stands with the diaspora and calls on all branches of government to uphold the constitution and ensure that the rights of all Gambians are protected.
