The Gambia Police Force has reported an incident involving two immigration officers and a taxi driver on the Senegambia-Brusubi OIC road that took place on Friday.
According to the police statement, the accident occurred when an immigration officer was driving in the fast lane from Senegambia towards Brusubi Turntable and a taxi attempted to cross the road at the same time.
“The Mobile Traffic Unit of the Gambia Police Force responded to a road traffic accident (RTA) involving two vehicles and their respective drivers: an immigration officer and a taxi driver. This incident occurred on the Senegambia-Brusubi OIC road on Friday, September 29, 2023.
“The immigration officer was traveling from Senegambia towards Brusubi turntable in the fast lane. Simultaneously, a taxi attempted to cross the road, resulting in a collision with the immigration officer’s vehicle. Another immigration officer was onboard the vehicle at the time of the accident. Both officers sustained injuries and were swiftly transported to Kanifing Hospital,” the statement said.
The statement confirmed that both immigration officers have since received treatment and were discharged. However, it was noted that the taxi driver fled the scene, leaving his vehicle behind. Efforts are underway to identify the taxi driver using the vehicle’s number plate.
The statement went on to remind the public, especially drivers, to strictly adhere to traffic regulations when using public highways to ensure road safety, as emphasized in the statement.
“Fortunately, after a brief period of admission, they received the necessary treatment and were subsequently discharged. The taxi driver, on the other hand, flew, abandoning the taxi at the scene of the incident. While efforts are currently in progress to identify the taxi driver using his vehicle’s number plate, the public, especially drivers, are reminded to strictly adhere to traffic regulations when using public highways to ensure road safety,” the statement said.
