Supreme Court Rules: Municipal Councils will No Longer Be Dissolved Three Months Before Elections

Talib Ahmed Bensouda and 55 other Chairmen and Councilors filed a case against the State in the Supreme Court to challenge some of the powers of the Government under the Local Government Act. Today the court entered judgment in their favour and made the following orders:
1) Local Government elections will
Be held every 4 years and not every five years from April 2023.
2) Local Governments and Municipal Councils will no longer be dissolved 3 months before elections.
The President shall no longer appoint interim management to oversee councils 3 months before elections. Councils shall continue to operate until the end of their mandate and just before elections.
3) Councils and Mayors no longer need the permission of the Minister of Local Government in order to travel outside the Gambia
