His Excellency President Adama Barrow on Monday presided over the official inauguration of Star TV and Radio’s new office complex, marking a significant milestone in The Gambia’s media landscape.

According to the management of Star TV and Radio, this event represents a major step forward in their mission to promote media excellence and expand their reach across the country.

The ceremony was attended by industry leaders, government officials, private sector representatives, and prominent media personalities. It marked a new chapter in the broadcasting sector, as the station pledged to deliver high-quality content and diverse programming to its audience.

With state-of-the-art technology, the channel aims to redefine news and entertainment delivery, offering viewers a modern and engaging media experience.

In his opening remarks, Alfa Karaga, Chief Executive Officer of Star TV and Radio, highlighted that the inauguration of their new facility marks 13 years of unwavering commitment to excellence in broadcasting.

He described the occasion as more than the unveiling of a physical structure; it symbolizes the growth, resilience, and dedication that have defined Star TV and Radio since its establishment in September 2012.
“This expansion cemented our roles as a trusted media house in the Gambia. Our journey has been one of determination driven by dedication of our founder including our Gambian businessman and philanthropist Hagie Baniko Sissoko. His vision laid the foundation for what we proudly celebrate today,” he said.

He highlighted that the modern complex features radio and TV broadcasting studios, audio recording studios, video and audio production workshops, modern news production rooms, among other facilities.

He added that they take pride in delivering accurate information, facilitating public debate, fact-checking, educating voters, covering key events, and promoting transparency.
“This commitment was evident during the 2026, political impasse and subsequent elections by upholding fair and unbiased reporting we contributed to a more informed electorate and stronger democracy,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the President of the Gambia Press Union, Matty Touray emphasized that as they celebrate the expansion of Start TV and Radio, they are also celebrating the opportunity to open doors wider for young and aspiring journalists.

She noted that the media industry should not be an exclusive space dominated by a select few but rather a nurturing ground for diverse voices, fresh perspectives, and innovative storytelling.
“This event is proof of the unwavering dedication and commitment to the media practitioners in the Gambia, who continue to uphold journalistic values by informing, educating and empowering citizens through the right information,” she said.

She highlighted that while they recognize the significant progress made in promoting neighborhood freedom in The Gambia since 2017, existing legal frameworks continue to hinder the full realization of press freedom.

Madam Touray further urged the government to take concrete steps toward repealing outdated laws that criminalize speech, suppress dissent, and limit journalists’ independence.

In his launching statement, President Barrow emphasized that since 2017, his administration has prioritized the establishment of an open and vibrant media landscape.

He noted that the enactment of the Access to Information Act under his leadership clearly demonstrates their commitment to media freedom, transparency, and good governance.
“As a private media institution, Star FM and TV has significantly contributed to the Gambian media landscape by offering a platform for diverse voices, creating employment opportunities and promoting national dialogue. Their commitment to journalistic excellence and public service is commendable. I urge you all to keep up the good work,” he said.

He urged the management and staff of Star TV and Radio to keep pursuing excellence by upholding ethical journalism and embracing new technologies to expand their reach and continuously enhance their services.

President Barrow reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and sustainable development.
“No one doubts that the media play a critical role in ensuring that information is disseminated accurately and responsibly, thus contributing to developing an enlightened and unified nation,” Barrow said.

President Barrow emphasized that a strong and independent media sector is a vital pillar of democracy. He assured that his government will continue to support initiatives that empower the press to operate freely, fairly, and effectively.

Speaking in his native language, Sarahule, the founder and proprietor of Star TV and Radio, Hagie Baniko Sissoko, expressed his gratitude to President Barrow for presiding over the inauguration of his new office complex.

Sissoko also praised the president for his commitment to promoting media freedom in The Gambia, highlighting the importance of Barrow’s leadership in creating an enabling environment for the media to operate.

Established in 2012, Star FM is one of The Gambia’s private radio stations, founded by Hagie Baniko Sissoko.

The management noted that, like many media houses, Star FM/TV faced significant challenges between 2019 and 2021, including political pressure, financial constraints, and competition from digital platforms. Despite these obstacles, the station remained dedicated to providing the public with accurate and reliable information.
