The Deputy Speaker, National Assembly, Seedy Njie is maintained as the chairperson of Standing Committee on Defence and Security, though critiqued by others.
The 6th Legislature under the stewardship of Hon. Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta commenced its first public session on the 25th of April 2022.
The session started with correction and approval of members of the Committees, International Parliamentary Delegations, and Friendship Groups.
During the proceedings, an intense debate arose over the nomination of Hon. Seedy Njie to chair the Standing Committee on Defence and Security.
A few members of the National Assembly argued that Hon. Njie lacks security background and expertise in that realm.
They proposed that Muhammed Kanteh, the NAM for Busumbala Constituency, who served in the security sector for more than 15 years, is better suited for the role.
Then the nomination of members for the various committees was moved and seconded with amendments, but is maintained as the chairperson of the Committee; as per the final list of members of the various committees released by the House, recently.
The various committees comprising new and old members are due to start work on 16th May 2022.
