The National Assembly Member for Sanneh Mentereng Constituency, Hon. Fatou Cham, has urged the Ministry of Health to find a way and accommodate people with Mental Health issues.
She stressed the number of Men and Women roaming the streets due to Mental Health Issues is alarming.
“Hon. Speaker, the mad Men and Women roaming in the streets. I want to ask the Ministry of Health, what could the Ministry of Health do to accommodate these people (People with Mental Health). Yes, there is Tanka Tanka, but the capacity of Tanka Tanka I don’t think that is enough for all these people who are mentally ill and roaming in our streets,” she stressed.
Hon. Cham said some of the people who are mentally ill did not have families around the Greater Banjul Area.
“Some mentally challenged people, and their families, are not from around this end. Sometimes they might be knocked down by vehicles, sometimes they will hit people, and sometimes something could happen to them (mentally challenged people),” she told her fellow Parliamentarians.
Hon. Cham further urged the Ministry of Health to find a way and accommodate people with Mental Health.
The Member for Sanneh Mentereng made these deliberations at the National Assembly during the adjournment debate of the National Assembly’s first ordinary session of the 2023 Legislative year.
