Professor Gibril Faal receives award for his work on using technology to empower migrants in Asian and Gulf Countries

At the Seventh Ministerial Consultation of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue (ADD) held on 10-11 February 2024 in Dubai, Professor Gibril Faal, OBE, was given a second award in recognition of his work on research, policy development and technical support to the 17 ADD countries. The award was presented to him by H.E. Dr.Abdulrahman Al Awar, Minister of Human Resources and Emiritisation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He received his first ADD award in October 2021 at the Sixth Ministerial Consultation, presented by H.E. Abdulla Ali Al Nuaimi, the then ADD Secretary General. Since 2019, Professor Faal has served as research coordinator on the theme of ‘Leveraging Advanced Technology to Improve Labour Mobility Governance’. He is the only independent expert on the ADD research programme, the others being senior officials of multilateral institutions.

Professor Gibril Faal is a globally recognised multidisciplinary business executive and development expert. He is a Visiting Professor in Practice at the Firoz Lalji Institute at the London School of Economics (LSE). In 2017, he was appointed the first Visiting Professor in Practice at the LSE Institute of Global Affairs. He is the Director of GK Partners (GKP), which implements sustainable development programmes across the world. GKP is the implementing agency of the Migration and Sustainable Development in The Gambia (MSDG) project. Professor Faal produced three groundbreaking papers on migration and technology, namely: ‘Leveraging New Technologies to Empower Migrants (2020)’; ‘Tele-Justice: Facilitating Workers’ Access to Justice through Digital Tools (2021)’; and ‘Towards Effective Electronic and Online Dispute Resolution in the ADD Corridors (2024)’. In 2017/18, he served as the Overarching Expert for the United Nations consultations for the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).

The Abu Dhabi Dialogue (ADD) was established in 2008 as a forum for dialogue and cooperation on labour migration. The ADD consists of six Gulf countries of destination, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Malaysia; and ten Asian countries, namely: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The outgoing ADD Chair (2021-24) is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the incoming chair (from 2024) is the Sultanate of Oman.
