The State House announced that on Friday, His Excellency President Adama Barrow officially inaugurated the National Muslim Elders Advisory Council (NMEAC) during a courtesy visit to the State House in Banjul.

The visit, according to the statement, aimed to strengthen the existing cooperative relationship between the government and religious organizations, with a focus on advancing national development.

“In his remarks, President Barrow extended profound gratitude to the council members for their commitment to working closely with his government in promoting peace and unity across the country. He further highlighted the importance of unity and having establishments such as the National Muslim Elders Advisory Council to enhance cooperation between communities. The President assured the council of his government’s support in making its benefits noticeable across the country and beyond. He pledged to donate to NMEAC members a vehicle to facilitate their outreach activities,” they wrote in the statement.

The statement noted that speaking on behalf of the council, Imam Lamin Touray, President of the NMEAC, expressed gratitude to President Barrow, describing him as a peaceful and harmonious leader who consistently prioritizes the interests of The Gambia.

Imam Touray also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting the government in its efforts to serve the nation’s best interests.

The statement notes that the NMEAC, established in September 2023 as a religious advisory body to the government, is composed of 17 executive members and 87 regional committee representatives. Its primary role is to collaborate with religious institutions, including the Supreme Islamic Council and the President’s religious advisors, to offer guidance and support in the promotion of peace and national harmony.
