The OIC Gambia Secretariat said they cannot yet confirm 100%, whether or not The Gambia will host the OIC summit this year.
The Head of Brand and Communication at the OIC Gambia Secretariat, Nfally Fadera said discussions on the matter are ongoing with stakeholders.
“We cannot confirm 100%, whether the summit will hold this year or not. Right now, discussion are ongoing. The schedule date for the summit is not only on The Gambia, it’s not only about Gambia. We are discussing with the Secretary General of the OIC, the secretariat and citizens of other countries under the OIC. The discussions are on going. That’s why we cannot say whether the summit will hold this year, or they will give The Gambia sometime,” he told King Fm radio on Friday morning.
The Head of Brand and Communication at the OIC Gambia added that what they are expecting and want is for the Gambia to be given sometime to finish its preparations.
“But right now discussions are ongoing, we don’t know the date that’s why we cannot say whether it will hold this year or not. OIC summit holds evey three years and 2019 was the last one in mecca. From 2019 to this year is three years. But if you see this year they have not talked about the summit, we all know the problems that COVID-19 has caused to world and the Gambia is not an exception. It caused the delay of our preparations. In our discussion, we are hoping they will give The Gambia sometime which could be next year 2023), year after that or next three years but that is not yet clear for now,” he concluded.
The 15th Heads of State and Government Summit is scheduled to be held in The Gambia in 2022.
The government of The Gambia set up the OIC-Gambia Secretariat to lead government’s efforts to host the summit at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo.
