NIA 7 murder trial: Defense rethinks ‘no case’ submission

Seven former top agents of the National Intelligence Agency, including their former director general Yankuba Badgie, are standing trial for the murder of an opposition activist Solo Sandeng.

The lead counsel for the Yankuba Badgie has withdrawn their initial intent to file a ‘no-case’ submission in the ongoing murder trial involving the former spy chief.

The lawyers for Badgie have expressed their intention to file a ‘no case’ submission today. However, Christopher Mene, his lead counsel said they are no longer filling a ‘no case’ submission.

The prosecution team led by lawyer Antuman Gaye have close their case about a month ago after calling 35 witnesses.

However, Mene said they now want the Prosecution team to call 5 other witnesses they have on their list but were never called.

The 5 will be cross-examined as the 35 were. “We believe they could bring evidences that are exculpating to the 1st accused,” said Mene.

But the prosecution has asked for such an application to be formally made before the court, a process that is expected to be done on Monday.

For now, only the third accuse Sheikh Omar Jeng is expected to file a ‘no case’ submission.

The case is adjourned to June 17 to determine on the application that will be made by the defense for the calling of the 5 other witnesses State did not call but are on their list.
