A military court in Yundum Barracks has jailed two soldiers for plotting to overthrow the government of President Adama Barrow. The soldiers were sentenced to a 3-year jail-term on Wednesday.
On a whatsapp chat group call “The True Friends”, Sulayman Kujabi and Lamin Kujabi, discussed ways of staging a coup with other members of the Gambian army while on a 2017 peacekeeping mission in Sudan.
According to a Foroyaa newspaper report, the soldiers were found guilty and sentenced to a three-year jail-term.
Warrant Officer Class One Sulayman and Lance Corporal Lamin were charged in November 2018 before the court-martial with incitement to mutiny, conspiracy to commit mutiny and endeavor to persuade soldiers to take part in mutiny.
The soldiers who have been convicted of mutiny and conspiracy to commit mutiny have been dismissed from the army.
This is the second batch of soldiers who were sent to jail on charges of mutiny. In May this year, seven soldiers were sentenced to nine years on charges of mutiny and others.
