The Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe earlier Tuesday has been elected as the new President of REFELA Africa in Kisumu in Kenya.

“Is a Win…Alhamdulillah 3x! Jerejeff to the entire people of Banjul-The Gambia and by extension around the world. A special thanks to all my supporters, well-wishers, and my team,” the newly elected REFELA President tweeted shortly after her election.

Following her election, many Gambians took to social media and congratulated her.

 “Congratulations Burr Banjul for your election as President of Refela. Every Gambian is proud of you. You have repainted The Gambia on the global political map on a positive pedestal. Papa is proud of you. Continue to live with God’s blessings,” the leader of the United Democratic Party said.

“Another Milestone for Gambian Women and young Girls as Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe is Elected as President of Refela Africa. May Allah guide her in her path to empower women! Congratulations Lord Mayor!” the Mayor of Kanifing Municipality, Talib Ahmed Bensouda said.

The CEO of Home Digital FM Pa Modou Bojang also said: “Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe appointed president of Refela (Africa). Congratulations to her. This is another milestone for The Gambia in general and UDP in particular.”

Prior to her ascension to the Presidency, Mayor Lowe was the Vice President of the network for West Africa. 

REFELA is the acronym for the Network of Women Elected officials of subnational and local governments of Africa regroups women members of the political bodies dealing with the governance of the local authorities and governments of Africa. A 15-member executive bureau manages the network representing the South, North, Central, East, and West Africa regions.
