Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul City Council and president of REFELA Africa is in Nairobi, Kenya to attend African Climate Week.

“I am honored to be invited to attend the African Climate Week taking place in Nairobi, Kenya from the 04-08/09/2023. The opening ceremony was colorful, with about 20 African Heads of State in attendance. Kenyan President William Ruto with his government and the other African Heads of State present at the event were determined to wield more global influence and bring in far more financing and support. The first speakers included young people, who demanded a bigger voice in the process,” the mayor said.

According to the mayor, she participated in three sessions, and one of the sessions she participated in was organized by the German International Cooperation Agency known as (GIZ) on Enhancing Urban Resilience Through Risk Informed Development.

“The other two were organised by the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). One of the sessions was on « Enhancing urban resilience through risk-informed development » and the other on « Fostering Resilient Sustainable Urbanization in Africa through Integrated Disaster Risk » all sessions were interactive, and I shared experiences on how mayors can support women and youth in climate adaptation,” she explained.

Mayor Lowe launched the Youth Volunteerism Project last week in Banjul before she left for Kenya.
