In a momentous ceremony held in Bakau, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the esteemed Lord Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), marked the beginning of an extensive infrastructure endeavour by laying the foundation stone for a network of roads spanning 15.4 kilometers, accompanied by 5.9 kilometers of vital drainage systems.
This ambitious initiative comprises the construction of 11 roads and 2 bridges, along with a comprehensive drainage overhaul throughout Bakau.
Set to commence imminently, these transformative projects are slated for completion within a three-year timeframe.
With a budget totaling D300 million, sourced from municipal coffers, these infrastructural projects signify a significant investment in the well-being and prosperity of KMC residents.
During the ceremony, Mayor Bensouda emphasized that these initiatives represent the council’s largest investment to date, reflecting a deep commitment to improving the quality of life for residents of Kanifing Municipality.
“With immense pride and gratitude, I stand before you to inaugurate the Kanifing Municipal Roads Project (KMRNP), the largest project in our Council’s history. This project underscores our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our members through improved infrastructure and sustainable development.
“This substantial investment aims to address the long-standing issue of inadequate road networks, which have hindered connectivity and economic growth in our community. Improved infrastructure will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also create opportunities for economic development and better access to essential services like education and healthcare. Mayor Bensouda foresees that the upcoming infrastructure will not just tackle enduring transportation challenges but also ignite economic progress within the municipality. He emphasized that a well-developed road network brings benefits that reach far beyond mere convenience, encompassing both economic prosperity and community development.
“Recognising the crucial role of robust infrastructure in fostering development, I made it a priority in my campaign manifesto to enhance our road network. Today, I am proud to deliver on that promise and lay the groundwork for a brighter future for Kanifing Municipality. This project is not just about building roads and drains; it is about creating pathways to opportunity and prosperity for every resident,” Mayor Bensouda said. In addition to the transportation improvements, Mayor Bensouda revealed initiatives aimed at bolstering housing affordability for residents of Kanifing Municipality. Mayor Bensouda urges all KM residents to back and engage in these endeavors, guaranteeing their triumph and enduring influence on the community.
“In addition to the KMRNP, our broader vision includes initiatives like affordable housing, knowing that the rapid population growth in the Kanifing Municipality has led to soaring rental rates, exacerbating housing challenges for many of our residents. Through this program, we aim to provide sustainable housing solutions and alleviate the burden of high rental costs on our citizens.
“In addition, the Council is committed to the construction of several modern markets equipped with daycare centres across the municipality. These markets will create conducive environments for women and young traders, promoting entrepreneurship and economic growth. Additionally, all council-initiated projects will prioritize youth empowerment, ensuring that our young people have the necessary support to thrive,” he said. Mayor Bensouda reiterated the Council’s dedication to developing a cost-effective and convenient urban transportation system that suits the community’s requirements. He emphasized that this system will prioritize inclusivity, ensuring it meets the needs of individuals with disabilities and senior citizens. By enhancing transportation access, the Council aims to improve mobility, connectivity, and the overall well-being of residents.
“This vision, however, cannot be achieved alone. We call upon all residents to lend their support and cooperation as we embark on these future projects. Your involvement and participation are crucial in ensuring the success of all council projects, including the KMRNP and its lasting impact on our community,” he said. Mr. Pa Sait Ceesay, the Chief Executive Officer of KMC, echoed Mayor Bensouda’s sentiments, praising these initiatives as symbols of the council’s unified dedication to KMC’s populace. He affirmed his belief in the significant, positive changes these projects will bring to the municipality’s socio-economic fabric.
“Today’s gathering symbolizes not only the beginning of a groundbreaking infrastructure project but also an evidence to our collective commitment to shaping a brighter future for the Kanifing Municipality and its residents. The benefits of this project extend far beyond improved infrastructure.
“The Kanifing Municipal Council Road Network Project will have a profound impact on the lives of our residents, businesses, and visitors alike. It will facilitate smoother traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety. Additionally, the improved drainage system will mitigate the risk of flooding, safeguarding our community against natural disasters and environmental hazards,” Mr. Ceesay said.
Mr. Ceesay asserted that the laying of this foundation stone symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter in the development journey of the Kanifing Municipality.
“As we embark on this endeavour, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to progress, unity, and prosperity. Together, we will build a brighter future for generations to come,” he said. Deputy Mayor Binta Janneh-Jallow emphasized the diverse advantages of the new road network, highlighting its potential to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety—an essential component of urban planning and progress.
Representing the contractors, Mr. Xu Peng affirmed their dedication to local economic empowerment, vowing to prioritize the hiring of Gambian workers, thereby strengthening the region’s economic fabric.
