A Gambian international footballer, Mohamadou Sumareh, has been given the green light to play for Malaysia by the country’s football association.
New Straits Times reported on Monday that Sumareh said he is ready to don the national jersey after receiving the green light from Football Association of Malaysia.
The 23-year-old Gambia-born player said he is now a citizen of Malaysia and is just waiting to be called for national duty.
“This is a good thing for me because FAM has given me the green light to join the national team. Of course I am ready.
“If they (the national coaching set-up) ask me, I will say I am ready,” he said.
FAM president, Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said based on Fifa regulations, any player who has resided in a country for more than five years and holds an international passport, is eligible to join the national team.
A local team Pahang’s coach, Dollah Salleh, said he supports the decision of his star player to join the national team.
“I hope it will happen because Sumareh can help to strengthen the national squad,” said Dollah, a former national player,” said Dollah, who was one of Malaysia’s best national strikers in the 1980s.
