Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission

The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has said that the commission would conduct the election of ward Councillors in April; and that of chairpersons/mayors in May 2023.
“Elections for councillors for the 120 wards will be held on 15th April 2023; while that of the chairpersons/mayors in the 8 local Government Areas will be held on the 20th May 2023,” Alieu Momarr Njai said.
He made the remarks at the IEC-stakeholders consultative forum and the launch of activities leading to the local government elections at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre on Wednesday.
“As you may be aware, the IEC is currently implementing the activities of the electoral cycle of 2021 to 2023. The conduct of local Government elections is key amongst these electoral activities,” Chairman Njai added.
He added that the commission has decided to fix different dates for the councillors and chairperson/mayoral elections considering legal requirements.
