The Secretary General and Party leader of opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) Mama Kandeh Assured that his party is in full support of the private bill which advocates reserving seats for women representatives at the Parliament.
“For GDC, we have been in the process since long before 2017. If you look at the last election, the only party that came up with more female candidates is GDC. This includes youth and differently abled persons. I think that alone is enough response for what you are asking for. For GDC we will support it hundred percent” Kandeh assured.
He made the assurance on Friday at a meeting with members of the Gender Platform galvanising support for the bill by meeting political parties.
The President of Gender Platform, Ms Tabu Njie-Sarr said their audience with the GDC leader was to seek his support for a guaranteed quota of women representation in the National Assembly.
Njie-Sarr said since the attainment of independence, women continued to be underrepresented in political office, thus the call for reserving two seats in each region for contest among women, to change the status quo.
