The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has rejected Momodou Sabally’s appeal to contest the upcoming parliamentary election, following his rejection by the commission on 10th March.
“The Commission writes to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 11th March 2022 on the above subject matter, and to convey its decision pertaining to the rejection of your candidature by the Returning Officer of the Brikama Administrative Area. At its session held on 12th March 2022, the Commission upheld the decision of the Returning Officer that your nomination has not complied with law as per the application of Section 90(1)(e) of the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia,” IEC’s reply to Sabally’s appeal read.
After a long scrutiny of Sabally’s nomination papers by IEC officials on Thursday, Commissioner Anthony Robert Secka, Returning Officer for the West Coast Region for the 2022 Parliamentary Election informed him that Section 90 (1)(e) of the 1997 Constitution has disqualified him from running in the 9th April election.
Momodou Sabally, howevers appealed the commission’s decision on the following day (Friday) but the commission upheld its Returning Officer’s decision.
