The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed its recognition of the executive leadership elected at the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Elective Congress held in December 2024 in Banjul. At the congress, Madikay Faal was elected as the Party Leader and Secretary-General.
Speaking exclusively to Kerr Fatou on Wednesday, Pa Makan Khan, Director of Communications at the IEC, reaffirmed the commission’s stance, emphasizing that the IEC adheres to decisions made at party congresses.
“They have already conducted their congress and we go by the congress decision. I don’t know much about that (Kebba Jallow taking back leadership) but one thing I can say is that normally we recognize the decision taken by Congress. Whatever they have internally I can’t say much on that. As far as IEC is concerned the executive that was elected at the congress is the executive of the PPP.” He said.
The IEC’s clarification follows a post made on the PPP’s official Facebook page on Tuesday, announcing that Kebba Jallow had resumed his role as Secretary-General and Party Leader. The post cited a decision by the party’s National Electoral Commission (NEC), which reportedly disqualified Faal and six other candidates following the December 21st Congress.
In response, a faction of the PPP led by Ousman Madikay Faal rejected Jallow’s claim, arguing that he had not legally regained leadership of the party. Faal, who was elected at the congress, described Jallow’s assertion as misleading and lacking legitimacy.
The ongoing leadership dispute within the PPP raises concerns about the party’s internal governance and the authority of its internal electoral mechanisms.
