The Gambia Government has accepted the TRRC recommendation to impose a life-ban on former president Yahya Jammeh from holding public office.
“The Commission (TRRC), having considered the totality of the evidence, made the following recommendations:
“Prosecute Yahya Jammeh for the crimes referred to in this (TRRC) report and impose a life-ban on him from holding public office,” an excerpt of the Government white paper reads.
The Government also accepted the commission’s recommendation to prosecute all the ‘Junglers’ and other persons listed for their complicity in crimes.
The Government’s announcement of its acceptance of the commission’s recommendation to impose a life-ban on former President Yahya Jammeh from holding a public office was conveyed in the Gov’t White released today, following such a recommendation against him and many by the TRRC Commission.
The decision was motivated the mass human rights violation allegations revelations at the commission against the former head of state in his more than 2 decades reign.
The allegation range enforced disappearances, torture, unlawful killings, and arbitrary arrests and detention in his 22-year reign of The Gambia, following revelations TRRC.
The 22-year rule of Former President Yahya Jammeh was characterised by allegation of mass human rights violation ranging from enforced disappearances, torture, unlawful killings, and arbitrary arrests and detention.
Reports stated that the rights violations in Jammeh-era were carried out systematically pursuant to a state orchestrated policy, to deliberately silence any form of dissent or threat to Jammeh’s rule by the state security apparatus including the NIA, police, and the military.
Jammeh has been living in a self-imposed exile in the oil-rich nation, Equatorial Guinea, since 2017, following his defeat by the Coalition 2016 candidate, Adama Barrow.
